What is a travel rewards credit card?
A travel rewards card earns points or miles on purchases that redeem for flights, hotels, and other travel. The value per point varies enormously by redemption method, so understanding the mechanics before you redeem matters as much as earning.
'Miles' and 'points' are mostly marketing distinctions — both function identically, earned at a rate tied to spending (say 2x on travel, 1x elsewhere) and redeemed against travel. The key variable is redemption value: a single point can be worth roughly 0.5 cents on a poor cash-out or 2+ cents booking premium flights through transfer partners. Many bank programs let you move points to airline or hotel loyalty programs, often 1:1, which is usually where the best value lives. Travel cards often carry annual fees of $95-$895+ to offset richer earning and perks, so the math only works if you actually redeem well and travel enough to use the benefits — audit your last 12 months of spending before paying a premium fee.
