What do miles mean on a credit card?

On a credit card, 'miles' are a rewards currency you earn on purchases — usually with a travel card — and redeem for flights, hotels, or other travel. Despite the name, most card miles have nothing to do with how far you fly.

A mile is simply a rewards currency branded around travel: you earn a set number per dollar spent and redeem them for travel value, typically around 1 cent each, sometimes more when transferred to airline or hotel partners. Card rewards come in three common forms — cash back (simplest, a flat percentage with no strategy required), points (flexible, often redeemable for travel, cash, or gift cards), and miles (best if you travel and want to redeem for flights and hotels). In all three, the reward is only worth what you redeem it for, and transfer partners usually beat the cash-out option. Choose miles if you travel; choose cash back if you want simplicity.
