ClearValue Cards

Is a secured credit card worth it?

Yes — if your goal is building credit. Pick one that reports to all three bureaus, has a clear graduation path, and earns cashback if possible. Capital One Quicksilver Secured is the canon pick; Discover it Secured is a strong year-1-rewards alternative but is not currently accepting new applications.

Secured cards are graduation tools, not destinations. Capital One reviews accounts at ~6 months and often refunds the deposit upon graduation to unsecured. Discover's card has a longer timeline (8-12 months) and a year-1 Cashback Match that makes the rewards math compete with mainstream unsecured cards — but Discover paused new applications for it as of 2026-06-02 pending a relaunch under new owner Capital One, and as of 2026-08-15 still hasn't reopened (WalletHub, updated 2026-05-28; MoneyAtlas, updated 2026-08-04), so it isn't an option for readers applying today.
